The "Dance of Tennis" is an innovative approach to tennis which helps youngsters develop six major life skills:

  1. Cooperation (non-violent behavior patterns)
  2. Relaxation (peace of mind)
  3. Imagination (visual-imagery),
  4. Focusing (Centering and grounding one's energies)
  5. Conflict resolution (resolving anxiety in competitive situations).
  6. Self-esteem (feeling good about who they are)
All of this is part of the DOT experience as youngsters learn basic tennis strokes. What's great about the DOT methodology is that it is highly transferable from sports into academics and other social and work place settings.
The Dance of Tennis programs appeal to youngsters because ... we use music and dance. Through using music youngsters are familiar with and dance steps that challenge them, we create a fun learning environment that ignites and balances the right & left hemispheres of the brain.

"If you can dream it, you can be it." This, along with the "YES" drill are the "Dance of Tennis" mantras that provide a powerful learning experience for third, fourth and fifth graders, a niche that has come from many years of experience, 1 1/2 hours of on court instruction and games with 1 hour of off court teaching.

History

  • The Dance of Tennis Project began in 1967 in South L.A. through Pepperdine University.
  • In 1971 it was taken over by University Year for Action, a VISTA Program.
  • In 1991 the LA Project was rekindled, in Los Angeles, California and Miami, Florida. Later came Washington DC and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The youth participants in the original Los Angeles program became teachers in the later programs.
  • 1993 we became the Joy of Athletics Foundation, a 501 [C] [3] Non-profit tax exempt program committed to sponsoring the Dance of Tennis Project.

Donations
As you might imagine running a facility such as ours can be time consuming as well as "fiscally challenging". Thank you for your support. Your contribution to our inner city program helps us achieve our goals of helping the youth of our country.
